Facts About the Uniting American Families Act

The Uniting American Families Act (HR 1537, S 821) allows gay and lesbian Americans to sponsor our foreign-born partners and children for residency in the U.S.

Permanent partners would have to demonstrate the bona fides of a lifelong, committed relationship.

  • There are 36,000 binational gay and lesbian families in the U.S.
  • 35% of male binational couples and 39% of female binational couples are raising more than 17,000 children.
  • Median age: 39. These couples are in the “sandwich generation,” often caring for aging parents and their own children.
  • 25 countries allow gay immigration.
